When you become a Flatbush Food Coop member, you get discounts off the shelf prices at our store. We have discounts for working members, non-working members, seniors, and Superworkers
In addition to the discounts, Members receive other benefits: voting rights in the cooperative, special Members Only sales, sales flyer mailings, the opportunity to participate in Coop governance, discounts on some Coop events, checkwriting privileges, and most importantly, we think, involvement in a member-owned and operated cooperative serving our community and the coop movement.
Joining the Coop
Joining the Coop is easy. Just come on over to the store and fill out a membership application. We'll take your picture--say "organic cheese!"--for your Coop membership card and you'll be on your way.
One-time Fee
When you first join the Coop, you'll pay a one-time membership processing fee. This one-time fee is $10 if you're the only adult in your household or $15 if there are two adults in your household.
Equity Deposits
In order to continually improve service to our members, we capitalize the cooperative through our membership equity program. We use equity funds over a long-term period to develop the Coop, e.g., to buy refrigeration equipment, shelving, and so on.
Equity deposits are essentially shares you purchase as a member-owner of the cooperative. Members pay annual equity deposits of $25/year for eight years or until they've deposited $200 with the Coop. Your first $25 equity deposit is due upon joining.
We completely refund all of your deposits to you when you terminate your membership (within 30 days). In effect, your deposits are non-interest-bearing loans to the Coop which, together with other members deposits, improve our physical facilities and make shopping at the Coop a more pleasant experience.
We invite you to become a working member of the Flatbush Food Coop. Working members play a critical role, helping to build coop community and reducing our paid labor expense. You'll also gain good karma and a higher store discount. Of course, we're delighted to have you as a member even if you don't do coop work, and we'll still give you a discount!
